UNIT 3: PROGREES WEEK 2 (17th-24th March 2014)

Front Cover
Last week i mainly focused on building the basic framework/layout for my magazine front cover, whereas this week i focused on building up the content of my magazine by filling existing white-space and intoducing some eye-catching colour in to the front cover. Consequently this week i made the following changes/additions to my magazine cover;
  • I added my main sell line 'How bad do you want to look good?' to the top left-hand corner of my front cover. In order to make my main sell line stand out from all the other regular sell lines i used a much bigger and bolder font for it. I aslo place my main sell line on top of a black front page splash of a speach bubble which contrasted well with the bold white text. To make my main sell line a little bit more 'in your face' i gave the black speach bubble a red drap shadow which made the speach bubble 3d and almost made it appear as if it was coming out the page. I believed the use of a speach bubble would be effective as my main sell line itself was actually a question aimed directly at the audience to make them feel persoanlly involved.
  • In additon to this i also added two small sell lines eiether side of my front cover to make my front cover look busier by covering up existing white space.
  • As well as this i also re-sized the the existing sell lines that where on my front cover from last week. I did this in order to make the sell lines slightly more eye cathing and to by doing so i also covered up some more white-space
  • I decided to move the issue date and price of the magazine over to the right hand side of the fornt cover rather than feature it on the left. I chose to make this decision because after looking at a number of male magazine read by my chosen audience i notice that predominatly the issue date and price where found tradioanlly under the masthead of the magazine on the righ hand side of the page. Consequently by moving the issue date and the price i have made my magazine front cover look more proffesional and i created a layout that was recognisable my my chosen target audience.
  • Another addition i made was placing 'your times your life' under the masthead of my magaine on the left-hand side of the page where previously the issue number and date featured. I did this to fill upo white space, make my front cover look busier and more proffesional.
Although i belive that the additions and changes i have made to my front cover have been significantly effective, after analysing my front cover i feel that the cover i lacking in field of depth and this is an issue i am going to adress in the next week of production.

Double Page Spread
This week i focused on introducing some more content and  colour in to my double page spread in order to fill up existing white-space. In order to do this i decided to make the following changes to my dps;
  • I added two quote inserts in to my article. Each qoute insert was a shocking fact that i thought would be alarming for the audience, in additon i also used the quote inserts as a means of simply breaking up the article so that y double page spread looks more interesting. Both qoute inserts where features in between two red lines and where written in a slighty larger red font then my articles so that the quote inserts stood out seperatley from the article itself.
  • Additionaly, i order to ensure that i could fit in my quote inserts in to my article, i had to slightly decrease the size of the font i used for my article.
  • As well as this, i decided to fill in the white-space in between my article header and kicker by adding the name of the journalist who produced the article 'Jason Mclean' and the name of the model who featured in the article 'Ryan Mercer'.
I notice that the features listed above where features that where commonly used in Esquire articles and therefore i decided that featuring them in my own dps will make format and layout recognisable and relatable to my chosen target audience.

However, although i believe that the changes that i have made to my article where affective, i still feel that there is too much white space predominantly in the top left corner of the the right hand page and around the iamge of my model at the bottom left-hand corner of the right hand page. I am also ensure about the placement of the 2nd quote insert in my article on the right hand page, i feel that it looks slightly out of place and believe that it would be more effective if it was to feature within the artcile itself rather than above it.
